Process
Instructional design is more than just building courses, it’s about solving the right problems in the right way. Think ADDIE in action. This section highlights the strategic thinking and behind-the-scenes work that often goes unseen but is critical to creating effective learning experiences. From aligning with business goals to navigating stakeholder needs, every decision is intentional. Here’s a look at how I approach each project with a focus on clarity, collaboration, and impact.
Discovery & Alignment
Before jumping into design, I start by understanding the business goals, audience needs, and success metrics. I ask questions like:
-
What problem are we solving?
-
Who are the learners, and what do they need to do differently?
-
How will we measure success?
This helps ensure the solution is aligned with both organizational strategy and learner outcomes.
Needs Analysis

I conduct stakeholder interviews, review existing materials, and analyze performance data to uncover knowledge or skill gaps. This often reveals hidden challenges, like unclear processes, tool limitations, or inconsistent messaging, that influence the learning strategy.
Solution Mapping

I map out the learning journey, choosing formats (eLearning, simulations, job aids, etc.) based on complexity, context, and constraints. I also consider scalability, accessibility, and how the solution fits into the learner’s workflow. I leverage AI to optimize my workflow and enhance the learner experience.
I use the outline in the Design Document to align with stakeholders. Once that outline is approved, I move into a Design Proof, essentially a living storyboard, within the actual tool (Storyline, Rise, PowerPoint, etc.). This lets me iterate and prototype quickly in a way that reflects the final learner experience.
Collaborate & Influence

Much of the work happens behind the scenes. Aligning with Legal, Compliance, SMEs, and leadership. I translate technical or abstract content into learner-friendly experiences, often acting as a bridge between departments to ensure clarity and consistency.
Iteration & Feedback Loops

I build in feedback early and often. Starting with the Design plan, to the design proof, Alpha and Beta reviews, pilot testing, and surveys. This allows me to adapt the solution in real-time, based on real learner input and stakeholder priorities.
Documentation & Sustainability

I create reusable templates, guides, and SharePoint hubs to support long-term use and team efficiency. This ensures the solution is not only effective now but also easy to maintain and scale later.
